The World’s Famous Water Conservancy Projects

(1) The Itaipu Dam
The Itaipu Dam, located in the junction of southwestern Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, with a total length of 7,744 meters and a height of 196 meters, is 7 times as large as the Aswan Dam in Egypt. Parana River, intercepted by the Aswan Dam, forms a man-made lake, with its depth of 250 meters and covering area of 1,350 square kilometers, whose storage capacity is of 29 billion cubic meters. Suffered from two electricity energy crises during the 1970s, the Brazilian government decided to cooperate with Paraguay to build the world’s largest hydropower station at that time. The dam, which was started in October, 1975 and was completed in May, 1991, costs US$18.3 billion. The total installed capacity of its electric generating set is 12.6 million KW.

(2) The Hoover Dam
The Hoover Dam, about 48 kilometers away from the city of Las Vegas, is built between mountains and canyons in circular arc with a height of 223 meters. Intercepted by the Dam, the Colorado River turns into Lake Meat, covering an area of 7.0796 million square kilometers with 152 meters in depth, considered to be the world’s largest man-made lake, even larger than the Lake Nasser of Aswan Dam. According to the “Boulder Canyon Bill” passed in 1928, the construction of the Dam was started in 1931 and was completed on September 30, 1935. The electric generating set of the hydropower station generates 4 billion KWH a year, which provides 75% of the total electricity to California.

(3) The Aswan Dam
The Aswan Dam is about 10 kilometers away from the city of Aswan, Egypt. Its major dam is 3,600 meters long, 111 meters tall, 980 meters wide at the base and 40m wide at the crest. Being cut in the middle by the dam, the Nile forms a reservoir named Lake Nasser, 500 kilometers long and 60 kilometers wide with a capacity equivalent to a two-year flow of the Nile. Lasting for 10 years, the construction work was started in 1960 and cost US$ 1 billion (which equals to US$10 billion today). It aimed at controlling the flow of the Nile, protecting it from floods and droughts. Meanwhile, it also targeted on expanding the area of arable land, improving the structure of agricultural products, and increasing the production of grain and cash crops.

(4) The Iron Gate Dam
The Iron Gate Dam, situated at the Cataract Gorge, Romania, is 1,278 meters long, 75.5 meters high, 50 meters wide at the base, and 16 meters wide of its crest road. The man-made lake, formed after damming the Danube River, has storage capacity of 1.5 billion cubic meters of water. The dam, co-constructed by Romania and the former Yugoslavia, began to have been built in September 1964 and was completed in May 1972. It is now the dam with the largest reservoir in Romania with a total installed capacity of 2.1 million KW.

(5) The Yanba Dam
The Yanba Dam is situated at the upper reaches of Agatsuma Keikoku Valley, in Naganohara, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Made of reinforced cement, the dam is 130 meters high with reservoir capacity of 100million cubic meters. It was planned to be built in 1962 with its original purpose of eliminating floods and promoting water conservancy projects. After a marathon negotiation with the local residents, the project was finally passed and the formal signing ceremony was held on June 14, 2001. Owing to the three alterations of the construction plan, it is estimated that its completion will be postponed to 2015.

(6) The Three Gorges Dam
The world’s largest hydropower project—Three Gorges Dam, was started on December 14, 1994. Located in the town of Sandouping, Yichang, Hubei Province, the middle part of Xiling Gorge, the dam is about 38 km away from the Gezhouba Water Conservancy Project in the lower reaches. The Three Gorges Dam project, which consisted of the principal part project and the diversion project, cost an investment of RMB 95.46 billion (calculated according to the price standard at the end of May, 1993). The total duration of the construction lasted from 1993 to 2009, 17 years in all, and was divided into three stages. It is a concrete gravity dam, with a crest of 3,035 meters long and 185 meters high. Its normal water level is 175 meters and the total storage capacity is 39.3 billion cubic meters (22.15 billion cubic meters for flood control capacity), which can withstand catastrophic flood. The two electric power stations, equipped with 26 sets of generators, can produce an average annual power of 84.9 billion KWH. The shipping capacity will be improved from the current 10-million-tonnage to 50-million-tonnage, so that the 10,000-tonnage fleets can head straightly towards Chongqing with a 35% reduction in costs.
